WILDERNESS + SISTERHOOD = MIRACLE
Finding soul friends is rare. Does anyone relate? Especially... as we get older and pickier.
Yet my recent vision quest proved me so, so, so wrong.
In 10 days with 10 women, and an amazing container (School of Lost Borders) we developed relationships that normally take a lifetime to forge.
And most of this time each of us was completely alone on the land, fasting in hope for a vision in the high desert. No human in sight.
It’s impossible to answer the question: “How was your trip?”
How does one describe when the land wakes up and starts speaking to you?
How do you share at a barbeque a story about a sister facing her elderhood?
How to make a coherent sentence about Grandmother Juniper holding you in her arms?
When the sun peeks from behind the clouds for a few glorious minutes of sunset, and you’ve been waiting for it since you woke up (days in May are soooo loooong). And you might even have stayed in your sleeping bag all day because you were too weak and too tired to walk around. And just as fast as it came, it’s gone and you better have gotten what you needed.
I did. I spent 4 days writing a song, and in that short moment I got to sing it to the river. The land loves our songs.
Returning from those lonely and hungry days I was greeted by my daughter Princess Aisha, we both rolled in the dirt and licked each other’s faces. And my sisters were there, tired and exhilarated all at the same time. We spent the rest of the day snacking, folding laundry and sharing our deepest depths.
You know the feeling when you set out to tell an important story and it’s not heard, or someone just politely nods before changing the subject? How many times have you had to swallow your story in the interest of surface conversation, not to make anyone uncomfortable, or to spare yourself pain when your vulnerability was met with judgment or disinterest?
Not on our trip. Our stories were listened to, heard and made relevant. Each of our stories mattered.
I’ve been home almost a week now and I’m still so inspired by the connection and the community we built. The timing is perfect because…
I want to be part of the solution of creating more enlightened communities and support systems so that everyone can experience and live from a place of unconditional love.
